Itinerary
Your visit to the Mummification Museum begins with a pickup from your Luxor hotel or Nile cruise, followed by a short drive to its prime location on the Nile Corniche, between the Luxor Temple and the Winter Palace Hotel. Upon entering the modern, air-conditioned facility, you'll be greeted by your Egyptologist guide who will introduce the museum's thematic layout. The tour progresses chronologically through the displays, starting with the religious and mythological foundations of mummification—explaining the roles of Anubis, Osiris, and the belief in the preservation of the body for the afterlife. You'll then examine the actual tools used in the process: bronze embalming knives, hooks for brain removal, and needles for stitching incisions. The centerpiece of the museum is the well-preserved mummy of Maserharti, a high priest from the 21st Dynasty, displayed alongside his ornate coffins, allowing you to see the final result of the meticulous process. Further exhibits showcase animal mummies (cats, crocodiles, fish) revered as sacred beings, the various resins and natron salts used for dehydration, and the symbolic canopic jars that stored organs. The visit concludes with an understanding of the evolution of mummification techniques across different dynasties before your guide returns you to your accommodation, having unraveled one of Egypt's most enduring mysteries in approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
