Itinerary
Your East Bank exploration begins with morning pickup from your Luxor hotel or Nile cruise. Your first destination is the monumental Karnak Temple Complex, a vast open-air museum and the largest ancient religious site in the world. Accompanied by your Egyptologist guide, you'll enter through the grand first pylon and walk down the famous Avenue of Ram-headed Sphinxes. You'll spend significant time in the breathtaking Great Hypostyle Hall, a forest of 134 massive columns adorned with intricate hieroglyphs and carvings. Your guide will point out the sacred lake, the towering obelisks of Hatshepsut and Thutmose I, and the various temples within the complex dedicated to the Theban triad of gods: Amun, Mut, and Khonsu.
After exploring Karnak (approximately 2-2.5 hours), you'll take a short drive along the Nile Corniche to the graceful Luxor Temple. Though smaller than Karnak, this temple is remarkably preserved and reveals layers of history, from its pharaonic foundations to Roman-era modifications. You'll enter through the grand entrance flanked by the seated colossi of Ramses II and the remaining obelisk (its twin now in Paris). Inside, discover the sun court of Amenhotep III, the colonnade of Amenhotep III with its procession reliefs, and the later adaptations including a Roman shrine and an Abu Haggag mosque built atop the ruins. Your guide will illuminate the temple's evolution and its connection to the Opet Festival, when statues of the gods traveled between Karnak and Luxor. The tour concludes with return transfer to your starting point, having experienced the spiritual and architectural core of ancient Thebes.
